Make time in Bodmin

Celebrate the Legacy of John Arnold with a Free Clock-Making Workshop

Did you know that one of Britain’s most influential clockmakers began his journey in Bodmin?

This November, local charity and creative community hub Discovering42 is inviting residents and visitors to step into the fascinating world of timekeeping with Make Time, a free, hands-on workshop celebrating the life and achievements of John Arnold (1736-1799), the pioneering clockmaker whose innovations helped transform maritime navigation.

Discover the Story of a Bodmin Clockmaking Pioneer

Born nearby in 1736, John Arnold went on to become one of Britain’s most important precision watchmakers. His work in developing highly accurate marine chronometers enabled sailors to calculate their longitude at sea, helping to make long-distance travel and navigation safer and more reliable.

The workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn more about Arnold’s remarkable contribution to science, engineering and exploration while taking part in creative activities inspired by his legacy.

Design Your Own Working Clock

Participants will have the chance to design and decorate their own working clock to take home, creating a personalised keepsake inspired by the art and science of timekeeping.

Alongside the clock-making activities, visitors can take part in interactive experiments that explore how we measure time and why accurate timekeeping played such a vital role in shaping the modern world.

All materials will be provided, making this a fantastic opportunity for families, creative minds and anyone curious about local history.

Help Give Old Treasures a New Life

As part of the workshop, Discovering42 is also welcoming donations of small toys and trinkets, including items that may be broken or missing parts. These donated objects could find a new purpose in future creative projects and community activities.

Explore Discovering42’s New Makerspace

The event also offers one of the first opportunities to explore Discovering42’s new makerspace, a community facility designed to bring people together through creativity, learning and practical skills.

Equipped with tools, equipment and resources for community use, the makerspace is intended as a place where people can share ideas, develop new talents and collaborate on projects in a supportive environment.

Book Early to Avoid Missing Out

The Make Time workshop takes place on Saturday 1st November and is free to attend, but spaces are limited and advance booking is essential.

Whether you’re interested in local history, science, engineering, crafts or simply looking for a fun and creative activity, this event promises an engaging experience that celebrates one of the area’s most remarkable historical figures.
