Bodmin’s Ghostly History
Bodmin has long been associated with some of Cornwall’s most chilling stories.
At the heart of the town stands the Shire Hall, where the infamous trial of Matthew Weekes took place in 1844 following the murder of Charlotte Dymond on Bodmin Moor.
Visitors can follow the story from the courtroom to nearby Bodmin Jail, where Weekes was imprisoned before his execution. Today, Bodmin Jail is said to be one of Cornwall’s most haunted locations, with tales of former inmates still lingering within its walls.
Lanhydrock has its own ghostly reputation too, with reports over the years of a mysterious grey lady and unexplained sightings in the historic house.
Legends of the Moor
Few places inspire folklore quite like Bodmin Moor.
One of Cornwall’s best-known ghost stories is that of Jan Tregeagle, a cruel magistrate said to be condemned to wander the moor forever, carrying out impossible tasks around Dozmary Pool.
The moor is also linked to the legends of King Arthur, with nearby Dozmary Pool believed by many to be the lake where Excalibur was returned after Arthur’s death.
Visitors may also recognise another famous local mystery: the Beast of Bodmin Moor. For decades, sightings of a large black cat-like creature have sparked debate, with no definitive explanation ever found.
Witches, Folklore & Strange Tales
Cornwall’s history is rich with stories of superstition and the supernatural. Among the most famous is Joan Wytte, often known as “The fighting fairy woman of Bodmin“, whose story remains one of Cornwall’s most enduring tales connected with folklore. Alongside stories such as Rose Wright and the Jackdaws of Bodmin Jail, these legends continue to add to the area’s mysterious character.
Discover the Darker Side of Bodmin
From haunted prisons and historic courtrooms to legendary beasts and mist-covered moors, Bodmin offers a unique mix of adventure, heritage and Halloween atmosphere.
During October half term, follow the stories, explore the landscapes and uncover the mysteries that make Bodmin one of Cornwall’s most fascinating places to visit.
